Math & Stats Undergraduate Research Information Session

This event covers the essential information needed for pursuing research as an undergraduate in mathematics and statistics. Several undergraduates will share their past experience in research and their advice on how you can secure a research position (e.g. NSERC USRA). Finally, Dr. Shohreh Rahmati will give a special presentation on the undergraduate thesis at York University.



February 2nd, 2023, starting at 5PM

Math Olympiad

The 3 questions will be based off of MATH 1200 material (Problems, Conjectures and Proofs). The first prize will be a Starbucks gift card $20 with the Pythagorean Award. Certificates of Appreciation will also be awarded to a selected student from each year. It’s going to be tons of fun, and rewarding!



January 20th, 2023, starting at 4:30PM

York University Annual Bernoulli Challenge (ABC)

The ABC is a series of true/false mathematics questions where students are eliminated from the challenge once they answer two questions incorrectly. All questions will be based on the material of our first-year mathematics program (MATH 1021, 1131, 1200, 1300, 1310) starting at a difficulty level all students are capable of answering and progress in difficulty until there are winners and prizes are awarded.

On the Uniqueness of the Homer Simpson Hair Problem

Professor Paul Skoufranis presents his solution (and thought process behind it) to a question about a math problem seen in The Simpsons:
Given an "M" shape on a blank canvas, the reader is asked to make 9 non-overlapping triangles using only 3 straight lines. The Simpsons episode presents a solution -- we want to know if this is the only solution (up to isomorphism). The solution is seen in Homer's hair in the picture below.

Math Competition

Participating in this Math Competition can provide you with valuable experience. This Math Competition will help you to enhance your arithmetic and logical skills, and at the same time, it will be a revision for you as we will be assessing you on High School Math. Although the questions would be High School Math, it will still be challenging because you will receive points based on how fast you can answer the question. The competition is open to everyone.

This was a chance for students to meet with their peers in Mathematics and Statistics, to learn a bit of new Mathematics.
